So we all know that the 90s was a great time for fashion. Also, it was a time where everybody was questioning if the world was going to end after the year 1999. This iconic pop culture movement, known as the Y2K movement (or millennium bug) dealt with the problem of coding of computerizing systems. However, there was a shift of everything in society of everything becoming futuristic. Whether its technology, architecture or music videos, fashion had a vital role into the futuristic concept. So lets dive into this concept a little bit.
People were really excitement about the fact about going into the new millennium. With this excitement, fashion in this era changed rapidly. If we look back around the late 1990s or early 2000s and watch every music video or see old magazine pictures through the internet, they have an unique attire that they were wearing. In our present time, people would always questioned,"What the hell were they thinking by wearing this?" because 2000s fashion was not the best looking era of fashion (I think it was, but for some people, it was a pass). In my opinion, i think it was the most interesting.
No matter if it was leather pants, alien-inspired hairstyles, mesh tops, the overuse of metallic attire, people were curious and trying to figure out what could be the next big thing. Back then, a lot of celebrities or individuals took a lot of bold moves in this fashion era and there was an expression of individuality. Due to the fact that it was the year 2000, there was an obsession with the future. There was a vibe of "Y2K attire" having a techno-utoptian-esque to it. How clothing use to be in the Y2K era, there is a lot of similarities of what we see now in current fashion trends. Even though Y2K fashion era was short lived, a revival is in existence.
From the Y2K movement, it embraced what the future can hold. Next week, i will go full in depth about Y2K as a whole and also if you want to see more cool Y2K aesthetics, check out the link down below to see this amazing blog called Institute for Y2K Aesthetics created by Evan Collins.
